Better Vision. Better Hearing. Better Georgia.

Vision and Hearing Screenings

The Lions Lighthouse Foundation provides vision and hearing screenings for groups and events throughout Georgia.  These screenings help educate individuals about their visual acuity, risk for eye disease, and to judge any hearing loss they may have suffered with age.

If you would like a vision or hearing screening at your work, church, or an event, please fill out a Screening Request Form.  Thank you!

Vision Screenings

Prevention of vision loss is essential in the population. Visual impairment is one of the most feared disabilities in America. The leading causes of vision problems in the United States are primarily age-related eye diseases: age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. As these causes of visual impairment become more prominent--especially those related diabetes--there must be more ways to prevent further and future difficulties.

Preventing chronic disease in any geographic area can be a daunting task, and eye health is one that needs to be fully assessed and tackled; it should not be a luxury, but a necessity. The Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation Screen Across Georgia Program is designed to identify people at risk for developing vision loss.

This is done in two ways:

1.  Risk Assessment: Patients are issued a questionnaire in which they answer questions related to their visual health. This assessment asks questions specifically related to your medical history, age, race, and last time you saw an eye doctor. Click here to download the risk assessment form.

2. Visual Acuity Screening: After the patient answers the risk assessment form, patients are then for near sighted problems and far sighted issues using the Titmus Vision Screening Machine. If a patient answers 20/50 or higher, then they fail the visual acuity screening.

The Lighthouse has nine vision screening machines to use at different venues and settings. We encourage Lions Clubs and other groups to be trained by the Lighthouse to do vision screenings in their local community at health fairs, festivals, and in nursing homes.

If you would like to reserve a vision screening machine for your event, please contact Laura at lgriffin@lionslighthouse.org or at 404-325-3630 x 332.

Hearing Screenings

Hosting a Hearing Screening is a great way to get involved with the Lighthouse Foundation. The Lighthouse Foundation provides hearing aid assistance and hearing loss education and awareness to Georgians. We could really use your help with getting the word out about hearing loss. You can help us do this by hosting an annual hearing screening in your community.  The best place to do this is the local senior center or church health fair.  It is our goal to host about three screenings per month, so please consider adding a hearing screening to your group’s annual calendar.

How do you host a hearing screening?

  1. Designate an organizer for the hearing screening
  2. Get trained to use the hearing equipment.  This is a mandatory step for anyone who will use the Lighthouse hearing screener.
  3. Designate the location, date, and time. Hearing screenings have to be conducted in a very quiet area with or without a power outlet. The hearing screening equipment may be operated with AA batteries.
  4. Contact Laura Griffin at the Lighthouse Foundation to reserve the equipment. The equipment may be picked up from the office or delivered via UPS. If delivered via UPS, please return to the Lighthouse via UPS.

Please contact Laura at 404-325-3630 x 332 if you are interested in hosting a hearing screening in your community.
