Recognition and Awards

Club Size Qualifications

The club awards are based on club size so that clubs will have an equal opportunity to receive recognition for their efforts. There are 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places for the various awards. The awards are given based on the following club membership numbers:

Lions Clubs
Small Clubs: 24 members and below.
Medium Clubs: 25-49 members.
Large Clubs: 50+ members.

Lioness Clubs:
Small Clubs: 24 members and below.
Large Clubs: 25+ members.

Leo Clubs:
There are no size specifications for Leo clubs.


INDIVIDUAL AWARDS


District Governor’s Award
This award is presented annually, at the discretion of the Lighthouse President, to the District Governor who demonstrates the best overall support to the Lighthouse during the District Governor’s term of office. The award is a medal.

The Mildred Bingham Award
The purpose of this award is to honor and recognize an individual Lion who has made significant and outstanding contributions to the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, Inc. This award is presented annually, at the discretion of the Lighthouse President, at the State Convention. Recipients may be past Lighthouse Presidents, past District Governors, past Executive Committee members or other Lions who have made a significant contribution to the Lighthouse, outside of their normal Lighthouse duties. The award is a medal.

Outstanding Lighthouse Vice President Award
This award is presented to those Lighthouse Vice Presidents that complete at least 5 out of 10 specific requirements. Vice Presidents can receive this award two years in a row, and all or none of the Vice Presidents may be eligible for this award in a given year. The award is a medal.

Lighthouse Leo of the Year Award
The purpose of this award is to honor and recognize an individual Leo who has made significant and outstanding contributions to the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, Inc., and who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in a particular area of Lighthouse activities. This award is presented annually, at the discretion of the Lighthouse President, at the State Convention. Recipients may be any active Leo in good standing in the state. The nomination for this award must be made by the Leo Club sponsor or by the appropriate Lighthouse Vice President. To nominate your Leo, please write a letter to Sarah at the Lighthouse explaining why you believe your Leo deserves this award. The award is a medal.

100% Associate Director Award
The 100% Associate Directors must meet each of the following qualifications:
  1. Attend Associate Directors Training
  2. Attend all Lighthouse Directors meeting
  3. Report back to Club general membership on proceedings of all Lighthouse Board of Director meetings and other Lighthouse monthly reports, activities and needs
  4. Serve on Club’s White Cane Committee (Club must participate in White Cane)
  5. Serve on at least one Lighthouse committee
  6. Serve as Club liaison as needed, between the Lighthouse and the Club
  7. Serve as Club liaison on Sight and Hearing services with other Lions Club
  8. Confirm in writing, to the District Lighthouse Vice President, your the completion of all requirements for 100% Associate Director
  9. Ensure that letter of appointment is sent from the Club to the Executive Director of the Lighthouse not later than July 31 for the year of service.

The deadline for Awards is April 30th.


CLUB AWARDS

These awards are calculated annually by the Lighthouse.

President’s Award
Awards are presented annually to those Lion, Lioness, and Leo clubs making the highest total dollar contributions to the Lighthouse. This award is based on the total of all contributions the club made during the year, excluding bequests. The award is the Lighthouse banner patch. There is a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for Lions and Lioness Clubs, and a 1st place for Leo Clubs.

White Cane Award

Awards are presented annually to those Lion, Lioness, and Leo Clubs who made the largest dollar contribution to the Lighthouse through funds collected during White Cane. The award is the Lighthouse banner patch. There is a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for Lions Clubs, a 1st and 2nd place for Lioness Clubs and a 1st place for Leo Clubs.

Monthly Contribution Award
This award is given to the Lion, Lioness, or Leo Club that makes the highest monthly, regular contributions to the Lighthouse. The award is the Lighthouse banner patch. There is a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for Lions Clubs, a 1st and 2nd place for Lioness Clubs and a 1st place for Leo Clubs.

Increased Contribution Award

This award is presented to the Lion or Lioness Club that makes the highest increase in total giving over the previous year. The award is the Lighthouse banner patch for the club banner.

Service Awards
These awards need to be applied for by the clubs.

The Hearing Award

This award is presented annually to the Lion or Lioness Club that provides outstanding support for the hearing program at the Lighthouse Foundation. The award goes to the club that collects the most hearing aids for the Lighthouse. Clubs must provide documentation of hearing aids collected. The award is a Lighthouse banner patch for the club banner.

The Ken Massingale Award

This award is presented annually to a club that provides outstanding support to the recycled glasses program at the Lighthouse Foundation. This award goes to the club that collects the most eye glasses for the recycled program. Clubs must provide documentation in the form of a letter of eye glasses collected. The award is a Lighthouse banner patch for the club banner.

The Best Lighthouse Project Award

This award is presented to the Lion or Lioness Club that plans and implements the best project benefiting the Lighthouse. The award criteria include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Creativity
2. Raising awareness of Lighthouse activities or needs of the population we serve
3. Promoting collection of eye glasses and/or hearing aids or collection of
4. Dollars raised
5. Recruiting Lighthouse Volunteers / Doctors / Increasing Membership
6. Publicity
Documentation of activities conducted, including newspaper articles, must be submitted along with a letter indicating why you think your club deserves this award. A narrative of the project should be included in the letter, and how it impacted the community. The award is a patch for the club banner.

The Lighthouse Publicity Award

This award is presented to the Lion, Lioness, or Leo Club that best promotes the Lighthouse Foundation and the services we provide. Suggestions for this award include, but are not limited to, activities in the community or local schools that raise awareness of sight and hearing issues, getting articles on Lighthouse services and club activities that support the Lighthouse into the local papers, radio, internet, or billboards. Documentation of activities, including copies of articles, posters, etc. should be submitted along with the application. The award is a patch for the club banner.

Best New Leo Project Award
This award is presented to the Leo Club that plans and implements the best project benefiting the Lighthouse. The award criteria include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Most creative
2. Raising awareness of Lighthouse activities, or needs of the population we serve
3. Promoting collection of eye glasses and/or hearing aids or collection of
4. Dollars raised
5. Recruiting Lighthouse Volunteers / Doctors/ Increasing Membership
6. Publicity
The club’s sponsor, the appropriate Lighthouse Vice President, OR the appropriate District Governor should help the club with the application. Documentation of activities, including copies of newspaper articles, should be submitted along with a narrative of what the project was and how it impacted the community. The award is a patch for the club banner.

Ten Million Dollar Club
The Ten Million Dollar Club was established at the February 1987 board meeting. Any Lion, Lioness, or non-Lion making a contribution of $100 or more to the Trust Fund will receive a special numbered certificate and vest patch. All donations to the club will be placed in the Trust Fund with the goal reaching a value of $10 million. Ten Million Dollar contributions are placed in the “other” category on the Lighthouse District Contribution Report and are thereby included in the President’s Awards Category.


Ten Million Dollar Club Award

This award is presented to the individual or club that makes the highest dollar contribution to the Ten Million Dollar Club in that year. This award is a framed certificate that is presented to the individual or club at their District Breakfast.


Progressive Ten Million Dollar Club

Individuals who have already purchased or received a Ten Million Dollar Club membership can elect to continue their contributions of $100 yearly for ten years or longer. A Lighthouse statuette with medallions for each year contributions are made will be given to those who indicate that they wish to become a member of the Progressive Ten Million Dollar Club. Yearly reminders will be sent to these individuals.

Tom Bingham Fellow Awards
The purpose of the Tom Bingham Fellow Award is to honor and recognize the highest achievement in support of the work of the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation. Individuals must be nominated by a Lion or Lioness Club and may be a Lion, Lioness, or non-Lion. By giving a Tom Bingham Fellow Award, funds go directly into the services operational account. Recipients are given a beautiful acrylic statuette of Tom Bingham and his guide dog, Cita. Recipients also receive a lapel pin.
Criteria for a Non-Lion Nominee:
1. Must have made significant and measurable contributions to the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, Inc.
2. Must be nominated by a Georgia Lion or Lioness Club.

Criteria for a Lion or Lioness Nominee:
1. Must be sponsored by a Georgia Lion or Lioness Club.
2. Must be an active participant in Lighthouse support at the club, district or state level.
3. The home club of the nominee must have made regular contributions to the Lighthouse during the same year

General Rules:

1. Sponsoring Lion or Lioness Clubs must pay $500 to the Georgia Lighthouse Foundation, Inc.
2. The $500 received by the Lighthouse will not be considered as a regular club contribution, but will be included in the “other” category of contributions  received and thereby included in the President’s Awards Category.
3. The $500, less the cost of the award, will be placed in the general operating account.
4. The $500 must be accompanied by a brief narrative explaining the nominee’s contributions to the Lighthouse

Luminary Society
The Luminary Society was started in the fall of 2006. It is a way for Lions to contribute
personally to the work of the Lighthouse. There are a variety of ways to give, and you have the option of making a pledge and paying it off throughout the year. You can also work your way up to the $1,000 level my making gifts over several years.

The Lighthouse will say thank you with a special Luminary Society pin featuring the Sapelo Island Lighthouse. For every additional gift of $1,000, we will enhance your pin with a precious stone, with different stones marking each $5,000 of cumulative giving.

You also have the option of designating your gift to the trust fund or sending up to 20% of your gift to the Georgia Lions Camp for the Blind.
